  • William of Orange was the stadholder of the Dutch provinces Holland and Zeeland.

Explanation
Originally the stadholder served as the deputy or substitute for the king in a certain part of the kingdom. When the Netherlands became an independent republic the stadholder became commander of the army and remained a very important figure in Dutch politics.
