CLIL Terminology Database - Preview

During a meeting held in Sofia on the 23rd of May 2003 representatives from the Amsterdam Faculty of Education and Sofia University agreed to renew and expand the plans for the old CLIL Database according to the criteria below.

  • Learners will be providing the materials for the database, i.e. texts with definitions and explanations of the terminology in these texts. This approach was considered to be in the best interest of vocabulary learning since the pupils would be working with the terminology themselves.
  • Although learners will be able to browse through the database, only teachers will be able to upload data and materials. Thus, the teachers will act as “gatekeepers” of the database, controlling the quality of the added material by checking the learners contributions before uploading.
  • The texts can be taken from the internet or (school)books. To avoid problems with copyright only excerpts from the text can be entered into the database.
  • The texts in the database are meant to serve as teaching meterials and therefore will be aimed at practical classroom situations (for example: manageable in a relatively short timespan).
  • For practical reasons the number of subjects included in the database will be limited to three (history, physics and geography). On a later date the database can be expanded by adding more subjects.
  • The database will be searchable via both terminology and topics of texts, hence serving both learners and teachers.

Now a small preview of the database is avaliable on this website. The preview consists of a text about the Revolt of the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. Some of the key terminology included in this text is highlighted and linked to pages were translations and explanations of the terminology can be found.

During an in-service CLIL seminar in Sofia in November 2003 the concept for the CLIL Terminology database and the preview were presented to a group of Bulgarian high school teachers. Their comments and reflections will be used for further development of the database. A short summary of their feedback is included in this website.
